Alright, let's hope third time is the charm.....so we began taste testing Helga's milk and it had a slightly bitter taste. I chalked it up to colostrom, all mastitis tests were negative. But then as the days went by, the bitterness got stronger and stronger😲🤮 so I dove into a bunch more research about milk. Apparently goats milk has the ability to easily absorb odors. I had been milking in the barn where we keep the chickens and goats. Originally thinking it would be convenient because we don't have much in the way of covered areas for milking. This morning I moved the milk stand from the barn out to the far end of their run. What a pain in my butt it was trying to milk her with the other goats and chickens all trying to get at her treats🙄😠the good news is the bitter taste is dramatically lower, almost non existent!😁 I can't believe what a difference it made! so I have completely nixed the idea of the folding milkstand and did a last minute conversion to add a stanchion and moved it well away from the barn and other animals. We are a work in progress but gosh darn it I will have delicious milk!❤️🤣
Pleasant surprise last night! When Heidrun showed up on the farm we were told she was in her first heat and showed signs of such, wasn't expecting any kids till November. Beautiful Doeling! Momma and little are doing well so far❤️will start milking in about a week!
Been busy today❤️ few pounds of beans snapped, blanched and frozen, eight quarts of bread and butter pickles, and first butcher of the season. Mond tony ad their first solo journey at processing. I'm one proud momma❤️ they both had them finished in less than 30 min, and the meat is no worse for wear than my own first attempts😍
